This operates in the following fashion.

The investor invests in a special purpose legal entity.

The building owner is the host of the solar on their building.

Building owner agrees to a long-term purchase of energy from the special purpose legal entity generally for 25 years at a reduced rate.

 Legal entity distributes tax benefits, depreciation payments and payments from sale of PV’s electric output to investors


If you sign a solar lease or solar PPA aka SPPA,

the tax credits and other financial incentives 

belong to the owner of the system the special purpose entity.

Energy Subsidies Fact Check

Fossil Fuels vrs Renewable Energy

  • CLAIM: Government support for renewable energy is costly, ineffective, and more significant than support for conventional fossil fuels.

  • FACT: Fossil fuels have received far greater government support, over a much longer period of time, than renewables have.


  • The oil and gas industries have received approximately $446.96 billion in subsidies from the United States, as opposed to just $5.93 billion for renewables, since 1918. In fact, the average annual subsidization of fossil fuels is more than 13x greater than the average annual subsidization of renewable energy, even though fossil fuels have been receiving government support for 70 years longer than renewables have.   • In 2011, worldwide pre-tax subsidies for fossil fuels reached $480 billion. On a post-tax basis, in which carbon emissions, environmental damage, and negative public health effects are taken into account, worldwide government subsidies for fossil fuels totaled $1.9 trillion.
